OLIVER Gwilt marked his return to competition by winning the doubles at the Yonex Welsh Badminton Championships in Cardiff last weekend.

The Guilsfield player linked up with doubles partner Daniel Font of Mold to overcome Matthew Sprake and Joe Cottrill in the final to be crowned pairs champions.

Gwilt and Font overcame Andy Gibbons and Iain Lovatt 21-7/21-5 in the opening round and received a walkover in the second round.

A 21-4/21-8 victory over Steve Aylott and Stephen Ellaway followed before beating Victor Pang and Vaughn Tovey 21-8/21-11 in the quarter-finals.

Gwilt and Font faced a tougher test in the semi-finals with 21-17/21-17 set victories over Andrew Oates and Adam Stewart to book their final place.

The duo saw off Sprake and Cottrill 21-14/21-8 in the final to be crowned Welsh champions.

The success marked a remarkable comeback for the duo which represented Wales in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

However since Gwilt has taken a break from the game due to work commitments until returning this year.
