Newtown 1

Barry Town United 2

NEWTOWN slipped to their second consecutive defeat as Barry Town United stole a march in the race for seventh place.

The Robins dominated but failed to make the most of their possession as the Dragons left Latham Park triumphant for the second time this season.

A frantic opening saw Barry break the deadlock in controversial fashion on nine minutes.

Ryan Newman’s volley through a crowded area was flagged offside by the assistant only to be overruled by referee Mark Petch.

Newtown hit back inside three minutes with Ethan Jones feeding Nick Rushton to slot past an advancing Mike Lewis only for Barry to regain their lead from kick-off with the Robins defence once again found wanting as Kayne Mclaggon fired home.

Both sides had chances in an evenly contested remainder of the first-half with Ryan Sears’ long range shot forcing Lewis into action while Jonathan Hood tested Jack Perry at the other end.

Newtown dominated the second-half with Jones setting up Tom Goodwin only to fire wide before Neil Mitchell went close from Luke Boundford’s throw.

A rare opening for the Dragons saw Jordan Cotterill test Perry but for the most part it was all one way traffic as Newtown asked all the questions.

Sears’ goalbound header forced Lewis into another save before the hosts were enraged after Kieran Mills-Evans was flattened in the area only for Petch to ignore penalty appeals.

The pressure continued and with 20 minutes remaining Mitchell went down in the area under pressure from Macauley Southam but once again Petch was unconvinced.

Moments later a rare foray into the box from Cotterill ended under pressure from Mills-Evans but Petch ignored a third penalty appeal.

The Robins laid siege late on with Rushton testing Lewis before Callum Roberts’ 25 yard free-kick forced the Barry No1 into an outstanding save at the death.

NEWTOWN: Perry, Williams, Sears, Mills-Evans, Roberts, Mitchell (Kenton 70), Boundford (Kershaw 80), Goodwin, Fletcher, E Jones, Rushton. Subs: Denny, Harries, Price, Evans.
