Penrhyncoch saw their dreams of becoming the first mid Wales team to lift the Dragon Signs FAW Amateur Trophy for 31 years dramatically dashed when they were defeated 5-4 by Newport City in a breath-taking final at Latham Park on Saturday.

It was the Ardal South East club who broke the deadlock the deadlock in the fifth minute when the ball was forced home from close range by Calum Bateman after the Penrhyn defence failed to clear the ball from their penalty area.

Newport City nearly doubled their lead four minutes later when James Bloom went close with a half volley.

The Roosters gradually found their way into the proceedings when Dan Owen drove into the Newport City penalty area and saw his low 13th minute shot parried by goalkeeper Cohen Riella.

Rhys Jenkins surged towards the Gwent club's penalty area three minutes later but saw his effort blocked before Owen's close range effort was deflected on to the roof of the net within 60 seconds.

Penrhyn's pressure finally paid dividends in the 20th minute when Harri Horwood arrowed a 25 yard drive into the bottom corner of the net to level the scores.

The Ceredigion club were now the dominant force and Dion Phillips headed over the target seven minutes later following a cross from the left before Zac Davies struck a low shot narrowly wide of the far post.

Newport City looked to respond when Bateman headed over the crossbar from a 34th minute cross on the right before the Roosters had a good opportunity to take the lead in first-half stoppage time but Cameron Allen could not quite connect with a long throw launched into the Gwent club's penalty area. 

Penrhyncoch led when Rhys Jenkins was on hand to head home at the far post from a 48th minute corner.

The Roosters increased their advantage when a 55th minute corner was headed back across goal and the ball was hooked over the goal line by Newport City's Frederick Stevens.

Newport City were back in the match within a minute of the restart when Cole Jarvis reduced the deficit to a single goal.

The Spytty Park club were back on level terms on the hour mark when Richard Noyes headed home from a cross on the right to create a dramatic finale.

Penrhyncoch looked to re-establish the lead with Owen firing wide before Tomos Evans to go on a driving run in the 71st minute but could only direct his 20 yard shot straight at Riella.

There was a dramatic finale to what had already proven to be a classic end-to-end encounter when Newport City went ahead in the 88th  minute when the ball was eventually forced home by Jay Jay Ogugua following a long throw into the penalty area before repeating the feat three minutes later when Ogugua glanced the ball home with a close range header.

The Roosters did not give up and reduced the deficit 95th minute courtesy of Tomos Evans but there was no time to rescue the game as the Gwent club held out for victory.
