Newtown 112-5 beat Beacon 109 all out by five wickets

NEWTOWN underlined their bowling strengths with a five wicket win at Beacon in division one of the Henshalls Shropshire League.

The result lifted Newtown to fifth in the table while also adding to Beacon’s growing fears with the club in the relegation dogfight.

The home top order struggled with Tom Anderson making his presence felt with Michael Turner caught by Dave Anthony for 12 before Anderson caught Martin Lewis off Joe Monk for 16.

It was then Craig Davies’ time to shine with Graeme Cowey and Jamie Martindale both caught cheaply by Anderson before Davies snared Tom Leslie LBW for 22.

Ally Laird bowled George Southall-Brown for 13 after Brooklyn Graham was caught by Tom Foulkes.

Laird was joined by Reino De Klerk in polishing off tail resistance to complete Beacon’s demise for 109.

Laird (3-5) and Craig Davies (3-20) proved the pick of the attack with support from De Klerk (2-10), Monk (1-17) and Anderson (1-26).

Town lost openers Monk and John Anthony cheaply in reply as Guy Leslie struck.

Ricky Davies was joined by Ryan Davies in steadying the Newtown ship and working the scoreboard.

Ricky Davies was caught by Mitchell Lloyd off Chris Cook for 14 with the same Beacon bowler also trapping Ryan Davies LBW for 37.

Foulkes was caught by Cowey off Graham for just eight but Town were not to be denied.

Anderson (18no) and Sam Morris (4no) formed an unbroken sixth wicket stand to steer the Welsh side to 112-5 and victory in the 29th over.

Leslie (2-29), Cook (2-21) and Graham (1-20) claimed wickets for the hosts.
