CARRIE Jones made her first international start for Wales on Tuesday night.

Despite falling to a 1-0 defeat at Llanelli’s Parc y Scarlets, the match represents another milestone in the career of the Newtown star.

Erin Cuthbert scored the only goal of the game on Tuesday in an entertaining women’s international challenge match.

The 17-year-old Jones, now of Manchester United, impressed with a confident performance in midfield.

It was another memorable evening for the Jones family who watched on with pride.

Proud Mum Joyce praised her daughter, saying: “It was great for the players families to be allowed to watch the match, especially as it was Carrie’s first in the starting line up

“Andrew and I are extremely proud of Carrie.

“She has worked so hard for many years to get to this stage and long may it continue”

The match formed part of Wales’ preparations for the World Cup qualifiers that start later this year.

Taking charge of her third match, manager Gemma Grainger named another strong and experienced starting line-up as she looked to build on the positive performances against Canada and Denmark in April.

Both Jones and Wales star Jess Fishlock came close with efforts inside the first two minutes as the home side maintained their bright start

Jones, playing with a maturity above her years, combined well with Fishlock after 13 minutes, before Angharad James tested Scotland goalkeeper Lee Alexander.

Scotland finished the first period the stronger of the two teams.

Erin Cuthbert and Claire Emslie both had headed efforts on goal, and it was Cuthbert who had the best chance of the half on 44 minutes as the Chelsea forward rattled the crossbar with a shot from the edge of the area.

Scotland opened the scoring after 58 minutes as Cuthbert capitalised on a mistake by goalkeeper Laura O’Sullivan to pass the ball into the empty net.

Wales continued to search for an equaliser with Natasha Harding’s effort deflected over the bar before captain Sophie Ingle could only volley wide from the edge of the area.

Scotland held on to claim the victory as referee Louise Thompson brought the match to an end.

Llanidloes-raised Manchester City forward Maria Francis-Jones was an unused substitute on the night.

Despite the defeat the match is another confidence booster for Jones who ended her debut season at Manchester United as player of the season.

Jones previously represented Cardiff City before moving to the English club in the summer.

Jones came through the system at Berriew Football Club and also starred for Llanfair Caereinion and Newtown High School sides in the Welsh Schools’ Cup.
