Wales' top female footballers have used the Powys countryside as their inspiration as they prepare for an international clash with Scotland.

Gemma Grainger hopes her Wales Women’s team hit new heights after her squad went climbing ahead of their Scotland friendly.

Wales end their season in Llanelli on Tuesday with Grainger seeking to build on encouraging displays in her first two games against Canada and Denmark.

The squad’s preparation for the Scotland game has included a team-bonding trip to the Powys countryside and plenty of outdoor activities.

Grainger said: “We went up to Brecon for a couple of days and got to do some climbing and caving.

“We did a little bit of walking as well and brought in some people from the Marines.

“They were there to share their environment and philosophy and show us why they’re successful.

“Part of the plan was to look at who we are off the pitch as well as on the pitch. It was also nice to take the girls outside their comfort zone.”

Wales start 2023 World Cup qualification in September and this is their final game before that campaign starts.

Grainger: “Scotland is another good test for us, the third team we have played ranked above us.

“This camp is a real nice one because we’ve got just the one fixture, we’ve had a lot of time together to get on the pitch and work on things.”
