LLANIDLOES have targeted promotion ahead of the new Henshalls Shropshire League season.

The Recreation Ground club will be competing in the sixth division next season and captain Andrew Jones backed his side to mount a challenge.

He said: “Our aim for the season is to win the league, and at the bare minimum get promotion to the fifth division.”

The club were once among the highest placed of the mid Wales clubs before suffering several relegations.

However Jones insisted the talent was in the squad to start climbing the leagues once more having impressed last season when the club took part in local friendlies against several of their local rivals, including Newtown and Montgomery.

“I think we have proved the last couple of years, even with the Covid effected season that we are capable of playing at a much higher standard,” said Jones.

“There will be a lot of tricky games, and we are looking forward to playing the new teams in division six this year.”

With the players we have available we will be looking to finish in the top two, but lots of other teams in there will fancy their chances also.

The club has been boosted by the return of Andy Evans after several years while Rob Davies, Will Denham and Daniel Lewis will lead the batting attack

Vice captain Eogan Jones will open the bowling with Ryan Jones, Harry Turner and veteran clubman Adrian Foulkes looking to get as many wickets as they can.

Jones added: “We have a strong squad at the moment with 15 or 16 players available.

“So if we play like we know we can and have consistency every week, we should be there or there about’s come the end of the season.”
