Newtown 1 Connah's Quay Nomads 5

NEWTOWN'S first phase of the season ended with an emphatic defeat at the hands of champion's Connah's Quay Nomads.

The match was only three minutes old when Shane Sutton released Jamie Breese to surge from midfield and slot the home side into a surprise lead.

However it was to prove a fleeting joy as Nomads bombarded the home defence for the remainder of the first-half.

Neil Danns struck the woodwork with a 20 yard drive after 10 minutes and the pressure told five minutes later with Craig Curran swivelling home from close range after the home defence failed to clear Aaron Williams' long throw.

The Nomads continued to have the better of the half with their direct approach ensuring a busy afternoon for Newtown goalkeeper Dave Jones.

However with few chances carved the home side went into the interval level.

Jones found himself on the receiving end of some rough treatment at the start of the second-half, twice needing treatment for head injuries as the Nomads continued with its aerial bombardment of the home goalmouth.

Aaron Williams' cross was glanced wide by Curran before a rare opening at the other end saw Breese drag a shot wide from the edge of the area.

The Nomads led for the first time on the hour with Danns heading home from close range after another left wing cross from Williams.

Mike Wilde headed wide for the Nomads who proceeded to dominate the remainder of the game after Callum Morris slotted home a 74th minute penalty after Curran went down in the area.

Newtown had no answer as the Nomads put the seal on a dominant win with two goals in the final five minutes with Wilde heading home from close range before Jamie Insall's deft headed effort saw the Deesiders celebrate a fifth in injury time.
