Connah's Quay Nomads 2 Newtown 1

NEWTOWN gave the champions a fright before Connah's Quay Nomads hit back to triumph at Deeside.

The Robins travelled with confidence after their comfortable win over Penybont in midweek and led with their first shot on goal.

Alex Fletcher, one of the stand out performers from midweek, fired home on 17 minutes as Newtown celebrated a shock lead at the home of the champions.

Newtown's defence stood firm under Nomads pressure and on 24 minutes the home side were reduced to 10 men when Jamie Insall saw red for a rash challenge on George Hughes.

However just four minutes later the Nomads were level with Sam Dool's free-kick met by Mike Wilde for George Horan to head home.

The home side had the better of the remainder of the first-half but failed to create any further openings.

Chances continued to be sparse in the second-half before the Nomads led for the first time on the hour with Wilde heading home Danny Holmes' cross.

Newtown rang the changes and looked to get back in the game.

Jordan Evans dragged a shot wide on 74 minutes and the visitors dominated the remainder of the game.

However a resolute defensive display from the hosts ensured them three points and ensured Newtown made the long trip home empty handed.
