HUNDREDS of runners from across the United Kingdom took part in the second Builth Running Club Virtual Relay.

The event was held over 15 gruelling hours on Sunday and the second such event to be organised by Builth and District Running Club since lockdown restrictions led to the cancellation of so many sporting events.

The challenge was simple as clubs entered teams who competed over two hours and 15 minutes to see who could clock the most miles.

Port Talbot Harriers A won the event with 133.37 miles while Run4All Neath A were second with 132.32 with Ogmore Phoenix F completing the podium in third with 126.65.

Brecon AC ended sixth with 123.28 and Oswestry Olympians ended seventh with 122.19.

Newtown based Maldwyn Harriers ended 11th with 118.19 miles with Team Builth 13th with 116.53 miles.

Aberystwyth AC 114.86, Rhayader RC 111.19, Aberystwyth University Harriers 109.58 and Maldwyn Harriers Sunday Striders 100.86 completed the local flag bearers.

Organisers calculated the total distance completed by more than 900 runners was equivalent to the distance between Builth Wells and Cancun in Mexico.

Maldwyn Harriers team organiser Lizzie Cockle said: "In these strange times of fewer club activities, no races, no parkruns it was lovely to come together virtually and achieve something as a team.

"Everyone that took part really enjoyed it, we are very grateful to Builth & District Running Club for organising it."

The Harriers team included several Welsh internationals with Aled Breeze covering 9.31 mile in an hour.

Ollie Jones clocked up 9.23 miles, Maddie Griffiths 8.55 miles, Mackenzie McCourt 8.57 miles and Maddie Hughes covering 4.5 miles in just 30 minutes.
