Welshpool 145-7 beat Newtown IIs 112-8 by 33 runs

WELSHPOOL are Wales and West League champions.

Pool arrived at the Elephant and Castle Recreation Ground knowing victory would secure the title.

However an early wobble saw Paul Chapman and Dan Chodecki (7) depart cheaply to Brandon Baynham (2-15) while Lance Parkes was also stumped by Iwan Smout off Jonathon Davies for four.

Nick Davies was joined by Patrick Davies in pinning the innings together.

Nick Davies was bowled by Reino De Klerk (1-18) for 21 while Patrick Davies completed Jonathon Davies 2-20 for 25.

Veteran Russell Cadwallader arrested the decline with a top scoring 48no to guide Pool to 145-7 to defend.

Smout fell for a duck as Mat McWhinnie struck in reply with surviving opener Ian Hancocks pushing his side to 66-2 when he was bowled by Rob Anderson for a top scoring 46.

Newtown suffered a top order wobble as Matt Humphreys fell to Patrick Davies before Anderson (3-11) struck to dislodge Aaron Knight (8) and Ralph Barraclough.

Sion Jarman dug in for the middle order before his departure, caught by Chapman off Patrick Davies (2-9) for 12 left Town on 99-6.

Jonathon Davies looked to build a partnership but his fall to McWhinnie (2-17) for 14 spelled the end of Newtown's challenge for 112-8 and the crowning of Welshpool as champions.
