ELFYN Evans regained pole position in the World Rally Championship (WRC) with a dramatic win at the Rally Turkey.

The Toyota star was joined by co-driver Scott Martin in a cautious opening to the most attritional event in the WRC calendar and their approach paid off as the Dolgellau star toasted his third career victory.

The final day began with Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville and Toyota’s Sebastien Ogier leading the pack.

However both picked up punctures on the first stage of the day, the notorious 38km Cetibeli test, as did the third place man overnight, Hyundai’s veteran Sebastien Loeb.

Evans emerged from the stage with a mighty 47 second advantage as the rest of the chasing pack set out in pursuit.

Neuville leapfrogged Ogier into second with the six time champion retiring soon after for old rival Loeb to climb to third.

However glory belonged to Evans who now holds an 18-point advantage over teammate Ogier with two rounds remaining while Toyota remains at the top of the manufacturers’ standings by nine points.

Evans said: "I am very happy after a tough weekend.

"Our times were always close, but we knew it would be tough, we tried to drive well, in the middle of the road, that approach rewarded us.

"I don’t like inheriting positions like this but it’s Turkey, we have to take points when we can."

Next up is the Rally Sardegna before the season concludes in Belgium in November.
