ELFYN Evans walked away unscathed following a high speed crash during a warm up rally in Estonia.

Evans took part in the event as preparation for the Rally Estonia to take place this weekend but has now been ruled out.

The Dolgellau star clipped an unseen tree stump on the entrance to a sixth-gear corner near the finish of the fifth stage of the Voru-based event.

The impact tipped the Yaris into a series of rolls which ended with the car well off the road in the trees.

Evans and co-driver Scott Martin emerged from the crash unscathed.

Evans said: “We knew these cars were safe, but an accident like this one gives us more confirmation.

“The damage to the car is cosmetic. The shell is damaged extensively but that came from going through the trees. The car’s safety structure held together perfectly.

“In this kind of crash, you’re getting rid of the energy more gradually rather than all in one big hit.”

Evans was fourth, almost 20 seconds behind leader Ott Tänak, when the accident happened.

He added: “I turned in ever so slightly early to a corner. I saw the long grass, but I took a bit of a chance to keep my line.

“I was probably a wheel’s width off the road in the cut, but there was a tree stump hidden in there.”
