FOOTBALL in the village of Rhostyllen can be traced back to the pioneer days of the Welsh game.

A club existed in the village from 1879 until 1881 when Rhostyllen Victoria Football Club came into being and competed in the Welsh National League.

Alf Pugh and Bill Roberts both represented Wales for the club which disbanded in 1897.

Rhostyllen Sports Club were members of the Wrexham League in 1946 and the following year joined by Rhostyllen British Legion and Rhostyllen and Bersham Football Club.

Rhostyllen and Bersham and Rhostyllen Sports Club both competed in the league until the Bersham club folded in 1953 while the sports club became Rhostyllen Villa in 1955.

The club continued to compete in the Wrexham League though dropped Villa from its name in 1991 and merged with Bersham RBL to create Rhostyllen and Bersham in 1992.

The club reverted back to Rhostyllen Villa in 1997 though folded a year later.

Football returned to village in 1999 with the formation of Rhostyllen United Football

Club with the new club competing in the Wrexham League until disbanding in 2005.

The latest incarnation of the club was established as recently as 2015 with the club winning the North East Wales League in its first season to return to the Wrexham League.

Last season the club won the Wrexham Premier League title before suffering a massive points deduction which saw the club end bottom of the table due to an administrative error.

Despite fears the error would cost the club a place in the new national third division the club was awarded a place.
