MALDWYN Harriers Athletic Club members are remaining active during lockdown.

With Welsh Government restrictions on sport ongoing the Newtown based club has launched a monthly ‘Virtual Club Challenge.’

The idea was conceived by club assistant coach Sharon Jones after Welsh Athletics introduced a Welsh Virtual 5k competition early into lockdown with club stalwart Dave Peters taking on the huge task of putting together the results every month.

Members have five distances to choose from ranging from 1k, 3k, 5k, 10k and 20k and open to both juniors and seniors.

The challenge took place in May and June with July and August competitions on the horizon

Club members complete the distances and submit their times and they are given an age graded percentage based on the Parkrun method.

This has given all ages the chances to compete with a chance of winning.

Runs should start and end at the same place to avoid unfair advantage

Members are also advised to follow current Welsh Government guidelines.

May’s overall winner was Deri McCluskey with his best performance of 81.69 per cent while June’s competition was won by 11 year old newcomer Maddie Hughes with her best month’s performance of 83.01 per cent.
