ALEX Cookson has backed Kerry Football Club for success.

Cookson announced his decision to step down as manager of the Lambs this week but insisted his former charges "were on the cusp of success."

Cookson said: "I really feel like the club is on the cusp of a great few years, we have built some cracking foundations and if all the players stick together they can achieve great things."

Cookson is unable to commit to another season at the helm but promised he would remain involved as a supporter on match days.

A club spokesman confirmed Cookson's departure and their search for a successor.

The spokesman said: "It is with a heavy heart that Alex Cookson has called time on his role as first team manager.

"The decision hasn’t come easy but with a little one on the way, he will be focusing his time on his new family.

"Alex poured his heart and soul into the club and you won’t see a more passionate manager.

"He guided us to two very comfortable finishes in the league - which included some fantastic upsets, away days and sessions in the Herb. Thank you and good luck for the future."
