THE Diamonds are Powys Under 16s Netball champions.

The Welshpool club beat Builth Wells 11-8 and Maldwyn Swifts 14-2 to take the crown at Llandrindod Sports Centre.

Meanwhile Newtown Robins and Welshpool Sapphires played out an exhilarating 8-8 draw which saw both sides seal their places in the Welsh Finals in Cardiff.

Newtown Netball Club spokesperson Lisa Trigg said: “A fantastic performance from both Maldwyn Netball Club and Newtown and District Netball Club’s 48 players who took part.

“Both clubs showed improvement, determination but most of all great team morale and spirit which enables them to contest these matches at regional level.

“I’m very proud to be taking them to Welsh Clubs finals on May 10 which I know will help them grow with the experience.”

The Diamonds and Sapphires train at Welshpool’s Flash Leisure Centre on Saturday mornings while the Swifts and Robins train at Newtown’s Maldwyn Leisure Centre on Friday evenings.

Meanwhile the Newtown Summer League will commence on May 5 with fixtures played at the high school from 6-8pm.

Organiser Lisa Trigg said: “This league will be a huge benefit to the progress of players on the netball pathway.”
