NEWTOWN and Welshpool both savoured hard-fought victories in division one of the North Wales Women’s League.

Welshpool made the trip to Bangor University with 10 players and returned home 4-1 winners.

Teenager Kiera Gilliard stepped up to make her senior debut while Pool sealed glory courtesy of doubles from Beth Wyn Williams and Sarah Williams.

Elsewhere Newtown travelled to Bala with just nine players and prevailed 4-3 winners against the odds.

Jacqui Loxam’s strike kept Town in the hunt at the break before the heavens opened for an almighty hailstorm.

Karen Lewis inspired Town to glory with a second-half hat-trick to complete a memorable victory.

Meanwhile Llanfair Caereinion sealed a 2-0 win at Ruthin to complete a superb weekend for Montgomeryshire hockey.

Goals from Mary Griffiths and Ellen Jones won the day for the Pink Ladies in North Wales.

Elsewhere Radnor fell to a 2-0 derby defeat at Brecon in the South Wales Women’s League One.

Newtown also suffered a day to forget with a 10-1 defeat at Hampton-in-Arden in the South West Midland Men’s Premier League

The Welsh side were under the cosh from the opening whistle with only fine defending from Dai Williams and Toby Williams coupled with the form of goalkeeper Richard Jones keeping the hosts at bay for the opening 20 minutes.

However Hampton led by three goals before the break before Town reduced the arrears through Andy Denham who finished off a throughball after a fine midfield break involving Gareth Preece and Sam Kelsey.

It proved consolation as the home side stormed to a comprehensive victory and sealed the Welsh side’s heaviest defeat of the season.
