NEWTOWN were made to work before overcoming tenants Welshpool in the Mid Wales derby at Maldwyn Leisure Centre in North Wales Women’s League One.

Jacqui Loxam returned to haunt her former club by opening the scoring for Town before Sian Griffiths settled a 2-0 victory late on.

Llanfair Caereinion were also in action at their temporary Newtown home with a 3-0 win over Pwllheli.

Delyth Thomas, Ellen Jones and first senior goal for Lois Birchall ensured a deserved win for the Pink Ladies.

Meanwhile Presteigne endured a day to forget in Penarth in South Wales Women’s Premier League Two.

Abi Griffiths netted a consolation but it was not enough the Radnorshire side crashing to a 5-1 defeat.

Meanwhile Newtown suffered late heartache in a 2-1 defeat at home to West Bromwich in the South West Midlands Men’s Premier League.

Both sides played their part in a thrilling encounter with Andy Denham and Nick Ratcliffe-Owen going close for the hosts before the Black Country visitors opened the scoring on half-time.

Town were under the cosh after the break but hit back to level when Tom Hillidge and Sam Kelsey linked to set-up Gareth Preece to lash home.

The match continued to ebb and flow as Town pressed for a winner.

However a swift counter attack from the Midlands side led to them regaining the lead late on and Newtown could not force their way back into the game.

Captain Hillidge said: “We are disappointed but the players deserve praise for their efforts, excellent discipline and a never say die attitude.”
