NEWTOWN Rugby Club has hailed the progress of its emerging women’s section.

The new set-up was established in August last year and has already more than 20 active members aged between 12 and 50.

The side is coached by Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) level two coach Darren Bloor and meet at the club’s Recreation Ground at 6pm every Thursday.

Bloor said: “Women’s rugby is now huge both in Wales and globally with talk of a British and Irish Lions touring side being formed to match the hugely popular men’s touring team.

“Sessions are centred on rugby based fun and fitness and no experience is required. All abilities are welcome.”

Meanwhile women’s section members Nia Rowlands and Georgia Powell have made history after completing their WRU tag coaching course to become the first female coaches in the club’s history.
