PENRHYNCOCH suffered late heartache as Joe Chaplin fired Gresford Athletic to glory at Clappers Lane.

The inform Wrexham side threatened early with on-loan Colwyn Bay ace Chaplin forcing Penrhyncoch goalkeeper Leigh Jenkins into action after 14 minutes.

Penrhyncoch soaked up the pressure but struggled to get into the game during a disappointing first-half.

Meanwhile at the other end Jake Eyre's cross was headed wide by Jack Jones as Gresford ended the first-half on top.

It was a similar story after the break with Danny Holland firing over before Gresford broke the deadlock on 55 minutes with Jordan MacArter heading over Jenkins.

However Penrhyncoch were galvanised and levelled just seven minutes later with Steffan Davies on target to the delight of the bench.

Penrhyncoch came close to leading moments later with Jonny Evans forcing a top drawer save from home goalkeeper Jon Hill-Dunt.

The game came alive with Gresford threatening as Eyre and Holland linked to release Chaplin to fire wide.

The match remained in the balance until seven minutes from time when Chaplin struck with Gresford holding firm for victory to send the Roosters home empty handed.
