Newtown 0 Airbus UK Broughton 0
NEWTOWN scraped to a goalless draw at home to Airbus UK Broughton to secure their top six place by the skin of their teeth.
The Robins toiled in vain against a Broughton side which belied their lowly league standing and could have left Latham Park triumphant only for the hosts to hold out for a point .
Alex Fletcher tested goalkeeper Dave Roberts early on but the Wingmakers soon found their stride with Alex Darlington rattling the bar with a 14th minute free-kick.
Dave Jones came to Newtown’s rescue 12 minutes later with a stunning save to tip over Robert Williams’ long range strike as Airbus ended the half on top.
Darlington volleyed wide in the best chance of a dour opening to the second-half.
Nick Rushton blazed over from six yards on the hour in Newtown’s best opening of the game.
Jones continued to keep Airbus at bay, smothering George Peers shot before producing a smart save to deny Andy Owens.
Airbus could have snatched a late winner with Steve Tomassen’s header cleared off the line by Kieran Mills-Evans as Newtown held on for a point.
NEWTOWN: Jones, McAllister, Mills-Evans, Mitchell, Rushton, Harry (M Williams 78), Thorn, Mwandwe (Sheridan 90), C Williams, Flint, Fletcher. Subs: Steventon, Morris, Barnes, Berquez.
