WELSHPOOL Town Football Club will fly the Mid Wales flag in the quarter-finals of the Welsh Trophy.

The MMP-NL Mid Wales League One club overcame Radnor Valley last weekend to seal their place in the last eight of the country’s second most prestigious national cup competition.

Welshpool have been handed home advantage in the quarter-finals with the winners of Welsh Alliance sides Holyhead Hotspur and Llanwrst United making the trip to Maesydre.

Club spokesman Russell Cadwallader spoke of the pride throughout the club at its latest achievement and hope the tie would provide a further springboard to success.

The club has also applied for promotion to the JD Cymru Leagues third tier set for launch next season as the Lilywhites bid to climb the pyramid after several years of consolidation following two successive demotions a decade ago.

Cadwallader said: “The club is delighted to reach the last eight of this national competition and very proud to be the leagues final representative.

“It is the first time it has entered the trophy in recent years but the players are aware that Welshpool has a proud record in its earlier incarnation the Welsh Intermediate Cup.

“Any draw at this stage is very difficult, both Llanrwst and Holyhead are doing well in their league and will provide stiff opposition but hopefully with home advantage we are capable of being a match for anyone.”

Meanwhile it has been confirmed Welshpool Town Council could be set to increase its rent for Maesydre after it was revealed repair costs fell short of rental charges.

At a town council meeting on Wednesday a draft budget revealed the 2018 to 2019 repays costs for the pitches to be £9,030.

Welshpool Town and fellow tenant Waterloo Rovers both pay an annual rate of £700 compared to £1,100 paid by Welshpool Rugby Club and £1,000 each from Welshpool Cricket Club and Welshpool Bowling Club.
