LLANFAIR United’s meteoric rise through the Welsh football pyramid has been recognised with the club being crowned County Times ‘Club of the Decade.’

Ten years ago the club sat in the Montgomeryshire League but through the hard work of its committee have since risen to the JD Cymru North, the second tier of Welsh football.

In 2011 the club returned to the Mid Wales League for the first time in three decades with a huge community effort throughout the summer culminating in the Ivor Owen Stand being erected at Mount Field.

Rhys Stephens’ appointment as first team manager in 2011 provided further impetus while the club established its women’s side in 2012.

United won the Mid Wales League Two title in 2013 and the following season the club celebrated the most successful year in their history with five trophies being won, including the Central Wales Cup for the first time.

The club also came to national attention for the first time with a Welsh Cup third round defeat at home to JD Cymru Premier side Aberystwyth Town in front of more than 300 spectators.

Llanfair won the Mid Wales League One title in 2015 to secure promotion to the JD Cymru North for the first time in their history while also lifting the Montgomeryshire Cup for the first ever time.

Meanwhile the women’s team took the brave decision to join the North Wales League after the North Powys Women’s League disbanded.

The following season the club’s reserve side won the Emrys Morgan Cup for the fifth time in the club’s history while also retaining the Montgomeryshire Cup and surviving relegation from JD Cymru North.

Llanfair were relegated the following season but won the Montgomeryshire Cup for a third successive season while causing a great Welsh Cup upset by dumping Cefn Druids out the cup at Mount Field.

Meanwhile the club’s youth team completed a league and cup treble while the women’s side ended second in the North Wales League.

Llanfair finally won the Central Wales Women’s Cup in 2018 and the following season crowned joint North Wales League champions as part of a treble of honours.

Meanwhile Llanfair also won Mid Wales League One to return to JD Cymru North following a thrilling season long battle with Llanidloes Town before lifting the club’s 24th trophy in a golden decade.

Off the pitch the club’s Mount Field has been transformed with new further stands, changing rooms and sponsor’s suite.
