Newtown 0 Aberystwyth Town 0

NEWTOWN were left frustrated as old rivals Aberystwyth Town dug deep to leave Latham Park with a Boxing Day point.

The Robins were quick off the mark and threatened the visitors goal early on.

Niall Flint released George Harry who forced a save at his feet from the advancing Connor Roberts while Lufimpa Mwandwe also steered Joe Kenton's cross over the bar inside the opening five minutes.

Newtown continued to dominate and on 19 minutes Harry forced a save from Roberts who also produced a great point blank save to deny Mwandwe moments later as the Seasiders enjoyed a huge let off.

Aberystwyth were galvanised by the escape and grew into the game with Matthew Jones firing wide and ex-Newtown favourite Luke Boundford heading wide as the first-half ended goalless.

Newtown dominated the second-half with Kieran Mills-Evans firing over before Mwandwe tested Roberts.

Newtown almost made the breakthrough on 66 minutes only for Alex Fletcher's 25 yard free-kick to rock the bar.

Aberystwyth looked to make the most of their reprieve only for Marc Williams to be foiled by goalkeeper Dave Jones in a rare chance for the Seasiders as Newtown ended the match firmly on top.

Fletcher and Harry both went close for the hosts but failed to test Roberts as Aberystwyth held out for a point.

NEWTOWN: Jones, McAllister, Mills-Evans, Mitchell, Harry, Kenton, Thorn, Mwandwe, Flint, Fletcher, Kelly. Subs: Steventon, Lewis, Morris, Williams, Brownfield, Barnes.
