THE latest chapter of one of Mid Wales football’s greatest football rivalries will take place at Caersws on Boxing Day.

MMP-NL Mid Wales League One leaders Llanidloes Town roll into the village with more than just league points at stake against the Bluebirds.

The fortunes of the two clubs have long contrasted with both clubs founder members of the League of Wales, the forerunner of the JD Cymru Premier, in the 1992.

Caersws were unbroken members until relegation in 2010 while Llanidloes fell through the divisions following the relegation in the inaugural season only to rise again.

Throughout the rivalry between the clubs’s has remained with Llanidloes currently managed by Caersws legend Hugh Clarke who has masterminded the club’s rise to the top of the table.

A Llanidloes Football Club spokesman said: “Everyone is looking forward to derby day at Caersws and naturally it is the talk of the town in many of the watering holes in Llanidloes.

“A Boxing Day derby is always the one that stands out on the fixture list and a win could be a key result for either side.

“We expect a tough slog of a battle and in the best traditions of Boxing Day derby’s gone by.”

Caersws assistant manager Gareth Jones also relished the clash against the club’s oldest rivals and banked on a bumper crowd.

Jones said: “Everyone at the club is looking forward to getting back to business on Boxing Day and we have two great games ahead.

“After a ridiculously inconsistent start well below our expectations, we’ve finally hit an impressive run of form and our aim is to continue in this manner into 2020.
