NEWTOWN make their first ever JD Cymru Premier trip to Penybont on Saturday with the Robins closing on a top six place.

Manager Chris Hughes heaped praise on his players after last week’s battling victory at home to Carmarthen Town which maintained the club’s winning run.

“We’ve had a good run of performances over the last month and have kept on chipping away at the rest of the sides in mid-table for a place in the top six,” said Hughes.

“We did not really get into our stride against Carmarthen but we got the ball into the box and put them under pressure and got our reward.”

Newtown travel to Bridgend on Saturday before a festive double header against Aberystwyth Town.

“We will keep on working hard and see where it takes us.

“The sides above us have quality squads and played in Europe in the summer but we have shown we deserve to be where we in the table.”

Meanwhile Hughes praised captain Craig Williams who played his 400th top flight game in the 1-0 win over Carmarthen.

“Craig is a great example to other players and having come through the system at Newtown he is a club legend,” said Hughes. “He is a hard working player and together with Neil Mitchell, Kieran Mills-Evans and Dave Jones have been great servants to the club for many years.

“It is great Craig is now developing young players in the academy with players looking to emulate him.”
