WELSHPOOL ended second best at home to Shotton in North Wales League Two.

Joe Stranks starred with two tries for the hosts with both converted by Dylan Walton but it was not enough for Pool who crashed to a comprehensive 38-14 defeat.

Steve Ellson starred with a try and four conversions with Andrew Hearns, Shaun Kemp, John Ketland, Shaun Myddleton and Rob Myddleton also crossing for tries.

Newtown also endured a day to forget in a 38-15 defeat at Rhyl.

Town paid the price for their slow start as the hosts raced ahead with tries from Cal Morris and Richie Williams who added a penalty before Jason Blakemore crossed for a third try.

A Bryant Galpin penalty kept Town in contention.

It was the New Zealander who led the Newtown fightback bid after the break with two tries and a conversion but the damage had already been done as Rhyl celebrated victory.

Meanwhile Llanidloes’ clash at Wrexham was postponed.

Elsewhere Machynlleth ended second best in a 19-8 defeat at Ruthin IIs in division three.

Gerwyn Coleman scored a try with Jake Hinge kicking a penalty but a threadbare Machynlleth were unable to prevent Ruthin marching to victory.

COBRA’s first division fixture at home to Llandudno was also postponed.
