TWO Newtown football clubs have been boosted by sports grants from Powys County Council.

The grants form part of a £16k investment in grassroots sport by the local authority.

Maesyrhandir Football Club has been successful in applying for £1,497 toward coach education and equipment.

The club currently competes in Honda Division One of the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire League and based at Maldwyn Leisure Centre.

Meanwhile cross town rivals Newtown Wanderers have been granted £696 toward coach education and equipment with the Mitsubishi Division Two club based at Trehafren Field.

Wanderers spokesman Dafydd Evans said: “The club plans to improve training standards and embed a coaching culture.”

Maesyrhandir manager Ryan Hawksworth added: “This community grant enables the club to push onward and upwards.”

Penybont Football Club has received £1,490 as part of Powys County Council’s latest Sportlot grants.

The Watson Financial Mid Wales League South side will put the money toward facility hire, coach education and equipment.

Meanwhile Dyffryn Banw Football Club has received £1,265 as part of Powys County Council’s latest Sportlot grants.

The Llangadfan-based MMP-NL Mid Wales League Two club will use the money for coach education, facility hire and equipment.

Montgomery Town of MMP-NL Mid Wales League One has received £900 from the council grant scheme for coach education and equipment.
