NEWTOWN’S Welsh Bowl bid came to an end with a 27-7 defeat at home to division three west side Aberaeron.
Outside half Rhodri Jones proved the difference with the Gulls star amassing 18 points at the Recreation Ground who opened the scoring with an early penalty.
Jones soon opened the try scoring and added the conversion before kicking his second penalty as the hosts were punished for their poor discipline.
Aberaeron further pulled away with a try from full-back Rhodri Thomas with Jones adding the extras.
Newtown’s best of the game came either side of the break with their sustained rolling mauls leading to them being awarded a penalty try.
Newtown continued to compete and had their share of possession but Aberaeron had the final say with Jones completing his haul with a penalty.
Meanwhile Welshpool withdrew from the cup.
