DENISE Hazelwood has completed a whirlwind 18 months by claiming a major bodybuilding title.

Hazelwood, from Newtown, was crowned novice figure and physique champion for over 35s at the UFE European Bodybuilding Championship in London last month.

The victory represented the culmination of 18 months of hard work and commitment.

“In the last 18 months I have lost five stone,” said Hazelwood. “My body fat was 49 per cent when I started.

“I began going to the gym late at night when nobody was around.

“As the results started to show I needed a focus so I entered the UFE Championships in Lomdon after being inspired by a friend who won it last year after surviving Cancer three times.”

Hazelwood embarked on six day a week training programme with a combination of gym and cardio work while removing sugar, dairy and and reducing carbohydrates from her diet.

“At one point I dreamt I was being chased by a giant Cadbury’s Twirl,” admitted Hazelwood who revealed her confidence had been rejuvenated thanks to her new healthy lifestyle.

“Two years before I wouldn’t take my top off on the beach and then I stood on stage in a bikini in front of hundreds of spectators.”
