Newtown 2

Penybont 1

NEWTOWN overcame Penybont to claim a place in the fourth round of Nathaniel MG Cup on Tuesday with Neil Mitchell the home side’s hero.

Manager Chris Hughes shuffled his pack following a gruelling month with the changes paid dividends as the Robins produced a bright start.

Niall Flint and George Harry both went close before Lifumpa Mwandwe blasted over while Penybont struggled to make any headway past a well drilled home defence.

Newtown’s toil was rewarded in the 65th minute when Mwandwe finally broke the deadlock with a low strike beyond goalkeeper Rhys Wilson.

Mitchell came off the bench with 20 minutes remaining an soon made his mark by doubling the hosts lead with an assured finish within five minutes.

Penybont continued to battle and snatched an injury time consolation with Curtis Jemmett-Hutson reducing the arrears but Newtown were not to be denied and held firm for the final few minutes to book their place in the next round.

NEWTOWN: D Jones, Mills-Evans, Sheridan (Rushton 75), Harry, Morris, Thorn, Mwandwe, Williams, Flint (Mitchell 70), Fletcher, Kelly (McAllister 85). Subs: Steventon, Kenton, Barnes.
