NEWTOWN dominated but could make the most of their chances in a disappointing goalless season opener at home to Cefn Druids on Friday night.

A frantic start to the game saw the Wrexham visitors denied by the offside flag after James Davies looked to have opened the scoring on six minutes.

However the hosts dictated the remainder of the half with the Robins going close through Ian Sheridan and Lufumpa Mwandwe before Nick Rushton fluffed his lines from close range.

It was a similar story after the break with Newtown dictating the game while soaking up sporadic pressure from the direct Druids.

Sean McAllister and Alex Fletcher pulled the strings in midfield while Craig Williams and Jack Kelly continued to push Druids back into the own half.

Meanwhile Alec Mudimu and Dean Rittenburg efforts for Druids failed to seriously test Jones in the visitors only openings.

Kelly fired over from distance before McAllister lobbed Druids goalkeeper Mike Jones from 35 yards only for his audacious effort to dip over the bar.

Jones smothered a Rishton shot on the hour while Sheridan volleyed wide before Mwandwe scuffed an opening.

Newtown almost snatched a last gasp winner when Kelly’s dipping right wing cross looked bound for the top left hand corner only for Jones to tip over the bar.

NEWTOWN: Jones. McAllister, Mills-Evans, Rushton, Sheridan, Phillips. Mwandwe, Williams, Fletcher, Kelly, Barnes. Subs: Steventon, Harry, Kenton, Morris, Thorn, Flint
