TALGARTH Town lifted the first silverware of the season with a 2-1 victory over Penybont United securing the Owen Evans Memorial Mid Wales League (South) Summer Cup.

Newly installed player manager Scott Powell and Tom Jones struck to cancel Adam Chesell’s reply for the Polecats at the King George Field.

Powell will target retaining the title won by Mark Walsh who has stepped up following the success of last season.

Penybont will once again lead the challenge with the Racecourse Ground club welcoming Builth duo Chessel and Shane Claridge to boost their bid.

Manager Gavin Johnson said: “We hope to compete at the same level as last year but we are well aware there are some very strong teams in the league which will make it difficult.”

Brecon Corinthians return to Mid Wales following half a century in South Wales football adds an unknown flavour to the title race while a 2-0 pre-season victory over English non league side Merthyr Town has further underlined the ambitions at Rich Field.

Corries make their return to Mid Wales football at Presteigne Reserves while Talgarth make the trip to Llandrindod Wells Reserves on Saturday.

The opening weekend also brings derby action to Bright Park as Felindre host newly formed Knighton Town Reserves.

The Millers target of a mid-table finish has been boosted by the arrival of midfielder Russell Jones from Kington Town and Tom Griffiths from Ludlow Town.

Meanwhile Jordan Jones’ Llanidloes Town Reserves begin their title bid with a visit from Builth Wells Reserves while Rhayader Town Reserves host Brecon Northote in tonight’s (Friday) season opener.
