Berriew 0 Corwen 2

BERRIEW fell at the first hurdle of the Nathaniel MG Cup with defeat at home to Corwen.

The Rhiewsiders threatened early on with Xavier Mattise denied by the crossbar while new signing Dennis Bates was joined by Charlie Humphreys in going close before Richard Davies tested goalkeeper Dylan Jones.

Joe Williams’ swivelled shot forced goalkeeper Harry Wilkinson into action at the other end but Berriew ended the half on top with Charlie Humphreys heading wide before George Mitten lashed over.

However Corwen stepped up a gear after the break with Tom Williams’ deflected effort breaking the deadlock before the same player released Sam Henry to round Wilkinson and double their advantage.

Berriew rallied late on with Davies and Steffan Rogers going close before Corwen threatened to add a flattering late third only for Joe Williams to be denied by Wilkinson.

Manager David Jones said: “It was too big an ask with our absentees and Corwen deservedly went through.”
