TWO Montgomeryshire hockey players helped Wales achieve a double last week.

Llanfyllin’s Fergus Stevens was part of the Welsh squad to win the European Hockey Junior Championships III in Lithuania and promotion to the second division while Trewern’s Gemma Pryce was part of the Welsh under 21s women’s side to claim bronze in Turkey.

Stevens is sponsored by Adidas and currently in the process of beginning university life having graduated from Brecon’s Chris College.

The teenager helped Wales to a 6-1 win over the hosts in their opening match before beating Ukraine 5-2 in their second game.

Wales snatched a last gasp winner in the final, also against Ukraine, to celebrate promotion to the second tier of European hockey with the Welsh prevailing 4-3.

Meanwhile Pryce helped Wales U21 women to a bronze in the European Hockey Junior Championships II in Turkey.

Pryce, a member of Cannock Hockey Club, made her under 21s debut in January and so far has five caps.

A goalless draw with Scotland in the opening game was followed by a 1-0 win over Austria and 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic before losing 2-1 in a semi-final shoot out with Italy following a 4-4 thriller.

Wales beat Ukraine in the third place play off match to seal bronze.
