WELSHPOOL High School overcame its ongoing lack of sports facilities to stage a successful sport day.

Throughout the year pupils took part in qualifying events with the top 120 athletes selected to travel to Newtown’s Maldwyn Leisure Centre for sports day.

Records were broken as Jack Lewis and Gwen Kuipers broke the Year 8 long jump records with Ryan Edwards and Summer Roberts setting new Year 10 triple jump records and Lewis Wilde set a new Year 10 long jump record.

Meanwhile Year 8 athlete Maddie Griffiths and Year 10 athlete Ryan Edwards broke 800m records.

The annual Victor and Victrix Ludorum winners were Kyle Goodwin and Honey Roberts in Year 7, Jack Lewis and Gwen Kuipers in Year 8 and Devon Torres and Courtney Pugh in Year 9.

Dottie Evans and Summer Roberts shared the Victrix Ludorum in Year 10 with Lewis Wilde and Ryan Edwards sharing the Victor Ludorum.

Welshpool PE teacher Wendy Langford said: “It really was an excellent day enjoyed by all involved.

“The talents of our pupils never cease to amaze me and makes me very proud to teach at Welshpool High School.

Langford heaped praise on the school’s athletes for their patience as the school undertakes works to develop its sporting facilities.

“Work has started with the new changing rooms, shower and toilet facilities currently being developed,” said Langford.

“Work on the tennis courts, field and red gra also start this month.

“Although this has impacted on our sports day we are very proud of how our pupils have been so patient and understanding during the last 12 months.

“Meanwhile their standards have remained high and continue to thrive.”
