BERRIEW Bowling Club hosted a full Welsh international test match against the touring Australians last week.

The two day test saw the travelling Jackaroos prevail before heading to Leamington Spa to conclude their British tour with a test against England.

The Welsh side included a host of Powys stars but ended second best to a formidable Australian side.

Multiple discipline matches were held throughout the two day with the Antipodeans holding the upper hand.

The opening day included women’s pairs victory for Berriew’s Caroline Taylor and team-mate Sara Nicholls with the duo celebrating a 23-6 victory.

Later in the day Berriew’s Emma Gittins and Llandrindod Wells’ Sam Roff combined to win a mixed pairs match 20-17.

Nicholls partnered Gittins in a 23-16 pairs defeat before Berriew clubmates Bryony Wilson and Taylor were joined by Chloe Stewart in a 20-9 triples defeat.

Taylor and Gittins were also joined by Bethan Russ in crashing to a 32-6 triples defeat.

Taylor, Wilson and Gittins also formed an all Berriew triples side but came out second best in a 17-6 defeat.

The male contingent also struggled against their formidable visitors.

Newtown’s Mark Jones and Llandrindod Wells’ Luke Harwood lost a men’s pairs match 21-11.

Meanwhile Machynlleth’s Nigel Fleming and Andrew Fleming were joined by Llandrindod Wells’ Sam Roff in losing 19-10 in the triples with the Fleming’s joined by Montgomery’s Mark Weaver in a 19-11 defeat.

Andrew Fleming and Newtown’s Jones were also part of the men’s four side which slipped to a slender 17-15 defeat.

Taylor and Lee Daniels lost 21-14 in the mixed pairs while Weaver and Nicholls tasted a 21-9 defeat,

Llandrindod Wells’ Wendy Price and Russ opened the second day with an 18-17 pairs defeat before Wilson, Taylor and Nicholls lost in the triples 19-11.

However the Mid Wales combination of Andrew Fleming Weaver got Wales on the board with a 20-19 pairs victory before the men’s triples battled to 20-20 draw.

Taylor and Price teamed up with Russ and Nicholls in just missing out on triples glory, slipping to a 17-16 defeat after Gittins completed her superb weekend with a 21-11 victory in the women’s singles.
