MORE than 160 players took part in last Sunday’s girls football festival hosted by Berriew Football Club.

The event was held to coincide with the Women’s World Cup in France and geared toward attracting new players to the sport.

More than 100 people took part in the skills competition with Welsh under 17s international Carrie Jones, a product of the Berriew Football Club junior system, presenting medals to players.

Organiser Paul Inns said: “ I’m sure some of the girls present will have been inspired to follow in Carrie’s footsteps.

“One of the main purposes of the day was to try to encourage girls, who perhaps hadn’t had the opportunity to play football previously for whatever reason, to come along and give football a go and most importantly, to have fun when doing so.

“Judging from the very positive feedback we’ve had the day was a big success and one we will look to repeat next year.

“My thanks to the very many helpers, without whom the day would not have been possible, and also to the Football Association of Wales (FAW) for its support in ensuring the day was so successful.”
