LLANWDDYN Football Club has folded following a shortage of players.

Manager Jamie Williams conceded defeat in his battle to return the village club to Wddyn Park and with the village club facing a shortage of players the decision was taken to withdraw from the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire League.

The club reformed last season but a lack of suitable changing facilities in the village meant them unable to return to Wddyn Park, the home of a previous club which existed from 1964 and competed in the Montgomeryshire League with unbroken membership until folding in 2010.

Last season the club ground shared at Llanrhaeadr's Tanllan ground but had hoped to return to Wddyn Park next season.

However with club still unable to play at Wddyn Park due to a lack of changing facilities and faced with a diminished squad ahead of the new season manager Williams took the difficult decision to disband the club.

Williams said: "I am stepping down as manager and effectively folding the team.

"We were not going to have enough players for the season and without changing rooms in the village the club would still have to play outside Llanwddyn which is not why I started this team.

"It was a tough first season but an experience I will never forget. We had a few ups but mostly downs but we tried and that's all the Lake has ever done. I am sorry we could not get the team back home."

Williams hoped football would one day return to the Lake Vyrnwy village and thanked all who had supported Llanwddyn Football Club last season.

"I want to thank all the people who supported us, Llanrhaeadr Football Club for letting us play at Tanllan and given this a chance to happen.

"The Wynnstay in Llanrhaeadr for providing free food after games, Dafarn Newydd for the quiz night which set us up so well and Brian Bisiker of the Vyrnwy Hotel for paying for us to join the league and match balls.

"It has been an experience I have enjoyed and I am just sorry we could not get the club back where it belonged."

Montgomeryshire League secretary Bernie Jones praised Williams' efforts.

"Jamie deserves a lot of credit for trying to revive the club," said Jones. "It was always going to be difficult with the club unable to play in the village.

"Hopefully the village will install the adequate facilities in the future and the club could once again reform.

"I made by debut for Llanwddyn many years ago and the club was once a mainstay of the Montgomeryshire League and I am sure I speak on behalf of the league in hoping football is once again played in the village.
