POWYS’ leading young athletes starred at the Welsh Athletics Junior Championships in Wrexham last weekend.

Stars from the Newtown-based Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club were joined by Brecon Athletics Club starlets in taking on their peers from across Wales.

Brecon’s Kyle Davies was crowned Welsh under 20s boys hammer champion with a distance of 35.22 metres with clubmate James Williams winning the under 17s title with a distance of 37.00 metres and Henry Organ also won the under 13s boys javelin with a distance of 32.58 metres.

Maldwyn Harrier star Maddie Griffiths also enjoyed a memorable weekend which saw the Welshpool teenager crowned under 15s girls 3000m champion inn a time of 11.00.16.

Llanfair Caereinion’s Arthur Powell also achieved a podium place with his time of 23.57 sealing second spot and silver in the under 15s boys 200m.

Newtown’s Aled Powell completed the Harrier medal haul with bronze and third place in the under 15s boys 3000m race with a time of 10.00.22 while clubmate Callum Morgan of Welshpool just missed out in fourth in 10.05.63.

Several other Harriers narrowly missed out on a podium finish with Tregynon’s Oliver Jones recording a new PB of 2.08.54 to claim fourth in the under 15s boys 800m while Welshpool’s Mackenzie McCourt marked her championship debut with a time of 5.28.36 enough for fourth in the under 13s girls 1,500 metres.

Carys Breeze just missed out on a medal in the under 17s girls high jump with an effort of 1.35 metres sealing fourth with Brecon’s Glesni Powell fifth with 1.25 metres having also ended seventh in the long jump.

Piper Lloyd claimed seventh spot in the under 15s girls 75 metre hurdles while championship debutant Mya Bradley ended sixth in the under 13s girls 1,500 metres final.
