NEWTOWN celebrated a 29 run derby victory at home to Alberbury in Henshalls League One.

The home side struggled early on with captain John Anthony caught by Mike Crawshaw off Ed Kneale (1-20) before James Bird made his presence felt.

Bird (3-23) began his haul with Dave Laird caught by Rob Owen for six before claiming the wicket of opener Matthew Knight (20) and Ryan Davies for a duck.

However Tom Foulkes dig in his heels to frustrate Alberbury with a dogged middle order display.

Matthew Bevan (1-21) toppled Sam Cooke (9) before Owen (3-46) dislodged Foulkes (45), Tom Anderson (17) and Dave Anthony (10) with each stumped by Mark Jones to leave Newtown defending 133-8.

Jonathon Davies (2-29) struck early in reply with Lara Jones caught by John Anthony for 15.

Surviving opener Crawshaw was joined by Kneale for the second wicket and the duo worked the scoreboard until Crawshaw was caught by Laird off Davies for 30.

Dave Anthony (4-8) included the wicket of Kneale (34) while tearing through the Alberbury middle order to complete his season’s best figures and the end of the visitors challenge at 104-6.
