COBRA proved unable to add the North Wales Intermediate Cup to their league two championship trophy as Dolgellau stormed back to lift the silverware with a 36-11 win at Ruthin.

COBRA arrived with a depleted squad with 10 players missing the final but made light of their selection problems as several youth team players made the step up to the senior ranks.

The Meifod side led early through the boot of stand off Rhodri Jones and increased their advantage when wing Richard Noakes crossed for a try following a series of drives.

Dolgellau reduced the arrears with a penalty from Dafydd Roberts but COBRA went into the break eight points clear following a second penalty from Jones.

The turning point arrived inside the opening minute of the second-half when No8 Dan Jones was sent to the sin bin following an illegal tackle on Iwan Pugh.

Within two minutes Dolgellau punished COBRA with Henri Roberts’ penalty and a try from Rob Pugh bringing their side level.

A second penalty from Roberts gave Dolgellau the lead for the first time and opened the floodgates.

Eon Williams crossed for Dolgellau’s second try, converted by Roberts before Carwyn Pugh and Jake Hinge crossed for two tries in as many minutes.

Dolgellau completed their victory with a fifth try as Roberts broke from the halfway line to cross for and spark a night of celebrations for his club which finally ended its silverware drought.

COBRA club captain Hywel Jones said: “It was always going to be a tough afternoon against the team who finished runners up in the league, especially with a number of first team players unavailable.

“It was good to give some youth team players a taste of senior rugby.”
