POWYS came out on top in a thrilling final against Rhondda Cynon Taff to be crowned Welsh Schools Girls Under 15s champions in Oswestry on Sunday.

The match ended 2-2 after normal time before Powys prevailed on penalties.

Paris Scofield rifled Powys ahead at the home of JD Welsh Premier champions TNS only for the South Walian side to hit back and lead at the break.

However Powys refused to succumb and a spirited second-half display culminated in an equaliser with Dottie Evans on target to the delight of the vocal crowd.

The match would eventually be decided on penalties with goalkeeper Molly Forkings producing a vital save while her team-mates kept their nerve to prevail 4-2 on kicks.

Coach Rhys Stephens said: “All credit to the girls. They have shown they have the talent as well as the commitment this season and deserve their success.

“It has been a good year for the Powys Schools Football Association with its under 14s boys also making a semi final this season and we hope to build on the success next season.”
