SIONED Roberts struck the crucial equaliser as Powys hit back to draw 1-1 with Caerphilly and book a place in the Welsh Under 15s girls cup final on Sunday.

Roberts’ strike clinched a 4-3 aggregate victory after the Powys side won the first leg in Caerphilly 3-2 courtesy of goals from Dottie Evans, Georgina Jackson and Emma Williams.

Coach Rhys Stephens said: “This is an amazing achievement by the girls.”

The Powys side are coached at the Central Wales Football Development Centre which has taken a prominent role in the development of girls football in the region.

This season the side progressed through a tough group to end second to Rhondda Cynon Taf while victories over Flint, Swansea and Denbighshire ensured the Mid Wales side a place in the two legged semi-finals against group B winners Caerphilly.

The region’s under 13s side was unable to qualify for the knock out rounds and were eliminated from a group including Conwy, Denbighshire and Flintshire.

Powys will now take on Rhondda Cynon Taf in the final of the Welsh Schools Inter Association Under 15s girls cup at TNS Football Club’s Park Hall on Saturday, May 4 at 1pm.

It is hoped the game will attract a bumper gate with the match representing the biggest match in the history of the Powys girls set-up.
