THE third annual Powys Primary Schools Cross Country was held at the Royal Welsh Showground in Llanelwedd this month.
A record breaking turn out saw 460 athletes from 47 schools represented in a superb advert for Powys athletics.
The event was saved by a band of sponsors who stepped up to ensure it took place after Powys County Council’s crippling cuts to its sports budget threatened to see the popular event scrapped.
The sponsors include Tarmac, Royal Welsh Showground, RF Price, Rhayader Round The Lakes, Rhayader Running Club, Builth and District Running Club, Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club, Coyles Surfacing, Bradleys Peugeot Llanidloes, Llandre Sawmills and Radnor Hills.
Race results: Y3 girls - Chloe Edwards, Llanelwedd; Y4 boys - Peter Murphy, Llanfaes; Y4 girls - Betsy Johnson, Crickhowell; Y4 boys - Dewi Bradley, Rhiw Bechan; Y5 girls - Charlotte Lewis, Clyro; Y5 boys - Griff Hamer, Llanfair Caereinion; Y6 girls - Ruby Herdman, Cradoc; Y6 boys - Evan Roberts, Llanrhaeadr.
Builth Wells won the school title with 127 points with Knighton second with 103 and Llanelwedd ending third with 91 points.
