COBRA can look forward to first division rugby next season after a 17-3 victory at Dolgellau saw the Meifod side celebrate promotion.

More than 450 people descended on Cae Marian for the second division title decider with victory for the Montgomeryshire side ensuring promotion and on the cusp of the title.

COBRA dominated the early exchanges with No8 Jack Jukes making inroads into the well organised home defence.

However Dolgellau broke the deadlock with full back Henry Roberts steering over a penalty with COBRA spurning a chance to level when stand-off Will Wortington rattled the woodwork with his own attempt.

COBRA laid siege at the end of the half and capitalised on a loose ball with prop Steve Isaac pouncing with Worthington adding the conversion to ensure his side a five point interval lead.

Worthington added a penalty 10 minutes after the break to give COBRA a further cushion.

Indiscipline in the visitors ranks saw them temporarily reduced to 13 men but Dolgellau failed to capitalise and with time running out COBRA settled the outcome.

Worthington released flanker Dan Jones to dart under the posts for a try which Worthington converted to spark celebrations as the men from Meifod secured their seat at the top table of North Wales rugby next season.

Proud captain Hywel Jones said: “It was a gruelling encounter and both teams threw everything at each other.

“After a long hard season its an amazing feeling to finally secure the division two title.

“It’s great to be promoted back into division one and after a well deserved break we will need to train hard in pre-season for the challenges that lie ahead next season.”
