A STAGE of a the leading Women’s professional cycling race in the UK will be held in parts of Powys in June.

On Tuesday, April 16, Powys County Council (PCC) will hold a launch meeting which explains that Stage Five of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour Race will be held in the county.

Last year the race, which took place in June, was won by American, Coryn Riviera of Team Sunweb.

PCC Council leader, Cllr Rosemarie Harris said: “We’ve invited a stage of the Cycling Tour to Powys.

“They have said that they will come and this will be taking place in June. There will be one stage in Powys and will most likely take place around Knighton, Dolfor, Presteigne, that sort of area.

“So there will be quite a lot of focus on Powys.”

A spokesman for Powys County Council said that the launch event would be “A chance to hear about the Tour and to find out the potential benefits that hosting the event will have for Powys.”

A spokesman for OVO Energy Women’s tour said that all will be revealed about where the racing will take place at the launch event on Tuesday, April 16.

The OVO Energy Women’s Tour is Britain’s most prestigious stage race due to its status as a UCI Women’s World Tour event while one of only seven multi-day races to be categorised in the highest ranking available by the sport’s governing body.

 Launched in 2014, the event has been won by the likes Lizzie Deignan and Marianne Vos, and is regarded by riders, teams and officials  as one of, if not the leading professional women’s stage race on the calendar.

The 2019 OVO Energy Women’s Tour will begin in Suffolk on Monday, June 10.

Meanwhile the racing in Powys represent the fifth of six stages and will take place on Friday, June 14.
