THE Montgomeryshire Sports Awards have been saved.

Powys County Council ceased its financial support of the annual celebration of Powys sport earlier in the year and threw the future of the event into doubt.

However the organisation and hosting of the event has been taken over by a group of volunteers with Newtown’s Hafren Centre once again the venue on Thursday, June 20.

Dave Peters of Maldwyn Harriers Athletics Club hoped the 2019 event would be as successful as past ceremonies.

“Powys County Council are experiencing financial problems and it was felt Sport Powys did not have the time to stage the awards as they had done so brilliantly over the past past years,” said Peters.

“The Montgomeryshire Sports Awards committee felt not having the awards would be a disservice to the young sportspeople of Montgomeryshire who deserve to have their outstanding talent showcased.”

Peters is now the lead organiser of the eagerly anticipated event with a team of volunteers enlisted to ensure the June 20 celebration is a success.

“The format may be slightly different but it is anticipated that the categories will remain the same and the format for the evening will be similar,” said Peters who has played a major role in the development of the Newtown based Harriers club which has nurtured the talent of a host of past winners, including Welsh international athletes Andy Davies, Adele Nicoll and Lauren Williams.
