ALL roads lead north for Newtown Rugby Club this weekend.

The club’s thriving junior set-up has culminated in two of its age grade sides reaching regional finals.

Both will be contested on Sunday with the club’s under 14s taking on Mold in the RGC Plate Final at Rhos RFC while the club’s under 16s side travel to Mold RFC to take on their hosts in the RGC Cup Final.

Newtown under 16s coach Paul Herdman praised his side and expected a high quality final with a 12.30pm kick-off.

Herdman said: “I believe the two best sides in the east and south of the RGC region are contesting this final.

“It will be a hard fought match with Mold slight favourites due to home advantage.

“Both sides are uncompromising in their approach and it will come down to who adapts better to the referee and who adapts quicker to the conditions.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for these young players to test themselves in a pressures environment and I’d like to thank the organisers for their hard work in arranging this competition.”

Under 14s coach Neil Farrington echoed the sentiments ahead of his side’s clash in Rhos with plate final kicking off at 12pm.

Farrington said: “It is great for the club to have two teams in two finals in the first year of the RGC cups for under 14 and under 16.

“It is a reward for all the players for there hard work and dedication in training.

“This wouldn’t be possible without the continued support of the parents for bringing their child to training and games.”

Meanwhile the club’s youth side bid to etch their own chapter of success with Wrexham visiting the Recreation Ground in the quarter-finals of the North Wales Youth Plate on Saturday (2.30.)

Club chairman Mark Lloyd spoke of his pride ahead of a massive weekend for Newtown Rugby Club.

“It’s a proud weekend for the club which reflects the hard work by all the players and coaches involved and bodes well for the future of Newtown RFC.”

Meanwhile the club’s senior team remains in contention for silverware this season with a Cambrian Training Mid Wales Cup semi-final against Llanidloes and North Wales Intermediate Cup semi-final against COBRA.

COBRA’s stars of the future are also in action this Sunday with its under 14s side travelling to Rhos to take on Rhyl in the final of bowl (10.30).
